I'm Vanessa Stone and I cut into paper......

How Vanessa Stone Cards started.......

I have worked as an exhibiting artist for a long time, and been asked a lot for my images as greetings cards but it was 2013 when Vanessa Stone Cards really started as I was featured on the cover of Cambridge Edition magazine and that was the shove I needed to finally get the cards printed! You can see a couple of these covers below!

What inspires me......

I'm inspired a lot by the countryside around me on the Herts/Beds border, and the towns that are near me, especially Cambridge. I have lived here since the early 1990's but originally come from a village just near Salisbury in Wiltshire. I love exploring, by car or lots of walking.... finding wide open vistas or tucked away interesting buildings. England is so varied, that its fantastic to just head out and see what you can find on your doorstep! You can see where I go and what I get up to on my BLOG - Scalpel in my Hand

I'm inspired by all sorts of artists too, from Sassieta and Giotto for their stillness, to the posters of Mucha and the Beggarstaffs. I love the bas reliefs of Ben Nicholson and the engravings of Eric Gill. I look too to contemporary paper artists such as Peter Callesen, Helen Musselwhite and my friend Tim Budden.

How I make my collages......

These pictures show my technique.....it all starts with a line drawing or an idea. I transfer the drawing onto Canson black paper and then start to cut away areas. What I cut away makes what left come forward, so its a bit of a push me pull you process! As I cut away areas, I add coloured paper glued from behind and bit by bit the picture grows and develops. Its all about the layers and how I cut into them bit by bit to make the image come out.
